The Art of Japanese Fabric Dyeing at Kurokawa Daitou
By Sensibilities Team
Traditional Japanese Fabric Dyeing
Dyeing is a pivotal step in fabric production, one that transforms plain textiles into vibrant pieces of wearable art.
Our Artwear collection features delicate printing by the century old Kurokawa Daitou Plant in Kyoto, a leader in the dyeing industry known for exceptional craftsmanship.
Setting the Standard in the Japanese Fabric Dyeing Industry
Founded in 1920 in Kyoto, the dyeing process at Kurokawa Daitung is a meticulous art form. Each step, from fabric preparation to colour application, is carried out with precision by skilled artisans.
Their techniques range from traditional hand-dyeing and natural dyeing methods to modern, innovative technologies.
The fabrics are first washed to remove any impurities, then dyed in small batches to ensure even coloring and depth.
Recognised by J∞QUALITY and OEKO-TEX Certified
Kurokawa Daitou is a company officially recognized by J∞QUALITY, a quality-check body ran by the Japan Apparel Fashion Industry Council, that ensures that its certified partner brands and factories’ production lines (from fibre weaving to the final planning and sales) is done entirely in Japan.
In addition, for the past 10 years, the techniques and dyeing agents used by Kurokawa Daitong have passed the OEKO-TEX certification board’s rigorous testing with flying colours.
OEKO-TEX is an internationally recognized certification that ensures that all products with their label have been tested to make certain that all fibres and other components of the products use no toxic or harmful chemicals in the production process.
Organic Cotton Certified by OCS
It is a laborious process to produce organic cotton, something that is being done with meticulous detail in Kurokawa Daitou. Organic cotton goes through a separate production process to ensure no cross-contamination with other fabrics. In our Artwear collection, the print GUNSEI, is made in 100% Organic Cotton produced by Kurokawa Daitou.
Unmatched Craftsmanship and Expertise of Artisans
Behind every beautifully dyed fabric lies the skill of experienced artisans. The master dyers at Kurokawa Daitung bring decades of experience, perfecting techniques passed down through generations.
Their hands-on expertise allows them to anticipate how fabrics will respond to certain dyes and how to achieve the exact colour shades and textures. This level of mastery guarantees that each fabric not only looks stunning but also feels luxurious and rich.
The deep trust between Naomi Ito and the artisans in Kurokawa Daitou developed over the years has resulted in countless editions of beautiful nani IRO fabrics that continue to be produced to this day.
At Sensibilities, we deeply value the traditional craftsmanship that shapes our fabrics and aim to create products that are a blend of artisanal skill and modern design. Explore our Nani Iro Artwear Collection here.
