What is Tencel Lyocell?

Lyocell is a cellulose fibre derived from the Eucalyptus tree, while Tencel is the brand name given to Lenzing produced Lyocell fibre. It has emerged as a favourite among sustainable fabric choices, quickly gaining a reputation beyond its initial use in bedsheets.

From its softness and breathability to its environmentally conscious production, Tencel is making waves in the fashion industry, redefining how we approach everyday wear.

Origins of Tencel Lyocell

First introduced in the 1980s by Austrian company, Lenzing AG, it wasn’t until recent years that it gained mainstream popularity in textiles, coinciding with the rise of sustainability in fashion.

The name "Tencel" itself was derived from the concept of tensile strength—showcasing the fabric’s remarkable durability despite its delicate and soft feel.

DID YOU KNOW? As the world’s largest and most well known producer of quality Lyocell, it is estimated that Lenzing produces 70-80% of the world’s lyocell fibre.

Eco-friendly Credentials

One of Tencel Lyocell’s standout qualities is its closed-loop and non-toxic production process, where 99% of the chemicals used in its production are recycled, reducing environmental impact.

Wood pulp from eucalyptus trees used for Lyocell grows quickly with very little water, making them an eco-friendly crop. Lyocell is also fully biodegradable and can return to nature in a safe way, unlike many synthetic fabrics.
